Psalm 35 gives voice to all who face injustice, fear, or unseen struggle, calling on God to stand beside them with courage and truth. This hymn gathers that ancient plea into the landscape of North Antrim—the steadfast rise of Slemish, the winding Braid, the sea‑held edges of Rathlin, and the quiet witness of Skerry’s ruined church. These places remind us that God’s presence endures through storm and stillness alike. As we sing, we join generations who have sought God’s sheltering strength and trusted in the One who defends the vulnerable and restores peace.
When Shadows Rise Around Me, Lord
Kingsfold DCM
When shadows rise around me, Lord,
stand near with shield and light;
speak courage to my trembling heart
and guard me through the night.
As Slemish keeps its ancient watch
through storm and driving rain,
so hold me fast upon the paths
that wind the Braid’s green plain.
When voices turn against my name
and peace is torn away,
be Christ beside, before, behind—
my shelter on the way.
Let Rathlin’s tides remind my soul
your mercy will not fail;
your justice, like the northern wind,
cuts through each bitter tale.
Arise, O God of steadfast love,
defend the ones who fall;
let kindness be the final word
that gathers over all.
And on the height at Skerry’s stones,
where saints once knelt in prayer,
let ruins speak your faithful truth
and lift me from despair.
And when the snare is set for me,
Lord, turn my steps aside;
be wisdom in the narrow glen,
my compass and my guide.
From Fair Head’s cliffs to Cushendun,
your faithful hand is near;
you raise the lowly from the dust
and scatter every fear.
So I will praise you, Holy One,
with harp and breath and bone;
your peace shall be my dwelling‑place,
your heart my only home.
In storm or stillness, night or dawn,
your presence is my song;
and all who trust your gentle power
shall find their spirits strong.
